Abstract

The Judgment of Paris, created between 1885 and 1887, was one of the major works of the graphic artist, painter, and sculptor Max Klinger. Both the artist and the work were controversial in their day. However, in Alexander Hummel, Klinger had found a supportive patron who acquired The Judgment of Paris, exhibited it in several cities before donating it in 1901 to the Modern Gallery, now the Austrian Gallery Belvedere. Hummel’s aim was to unite The Judgment of Paris with Klinger’s The Crucifixion of Christ (1890) and Christ on Olympus (1897) and to display these works together. He envisaged that the paintings would be the spatial and conceptual focus in a new building constructed to house the Modern Gallery. Christ on Olympus was acquired by the Modern Gallery and displayed in 1903 with The Judgment of Paris as a provisional arrangement at the Lower Belvedere. The planned new building was abandoned, as was the acquisition of The Crucifixion of Christ. In 1918 this was acquired from Hummel’s estate by the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig.
